Geocache Description:

Linus Pauling was an American scientist specializing in chemistry, and particularly the nature of chemical bonds. Why do some atoms (or ions, or entire molecules) form attractions to other particular atoms/ions/molecules? He spent much of his early career examining the many types of chemical bonds and conceiving theories to explain the spectra of weak and strong bonds. Later he investigated a number of scientific topics that perhaps blurred the boundaries between scientific disciplines, including the structure of atomic nuclei and quantum chemistry, as well as molecular medicine, biologic enzymes, genetics and early DNA structural theories.

Together with his wife Ava Pauling, a prominent political activist and pacifist, Linus advocated for nuclear arms control and disarmament in the wake of the Manhattan Project and during the subsequent Cold War. One of his most tangible successes in this area was rallying prominent fellow scientists in favor of a ban on nuclear testing. This effort was turbocharged in 1961 when it was proven that environmental contamination from nuclear testing fallout, previously dismissed as unimportant or insignificant by authorities, was already causing significant public health effects via agriculture and food supplies. On the very same day that the first Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty between the USA, USSR, and UK went into effect, the Nobel committee awarded a Nobel Peace Prize to Linus Pauling for his advocacy in this area within the scientific community.

During his career, Linus Pauling won two Nobel Prizes -- in Chemistry in 1954, and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962. No one else in the history of the awards has been awarded two unshared Nobels.
