Geodetic control surveying is an area of geodesy that establishes precise reference networks providing high-accuracy reference points over large areas. Geodetic control surveying supports:
- Mapping
- Geographic Information Systems
- Property boundary surveys
- Construction projects
- Positioning and monitoring of engineering structures such as dams, bridges and highways
The Town of Ajax has established a number of geodetic benchmarks around the town.
This is a simple multi-stage cache. You will need to visit two, Town of Ajax Benchmarks in order to calculate the final location of the cache which can be found along a trail close to the second benchmark. I have included a parking coordinate for the second benchmark which is also a good place to park for the final cache. This parking lot is not open during the winter months so best to visit during spring, summer, or fall.
At Stage 1, you are looking for a benchmark on the northeast side of the bridge going over Duffins Creek on Rossland Rd. The marker has a unique 3 digit number. Record this number as AAA
At Stage 2, you are looking for a similar benchmark on the northwest corner of the bridge at the stage 2 coordinates. Record this number as BBB
To calculate the final North coordinate, take AAA and divide by 10, and add this number to the last three digits of these fake North Coordinates. The digital root of the final number is 9
N43 51.574
To calculate the final West coordinate, take BBB and add 29 and divide by 10. Add this number to the last three digits of these fake West coordinates. The digital root of the final number is 3.
W 79 04.283
The final cache is within 2km and is a nice walk on the Trans Canada/Duffins Trail system
