With Opening Day right around the corner, I've created a series of 9 caches in honor of our local ballclub, the Frisco Roughriders. Established in 2003 after moving from Shreveport, LA, the 'Riders play in one of the most iconic and beautiful minor league parks in America, Dr. Pepper Ballpark.
The Rangers might be a routinely abysmal franchise, but several future stars have sharpened their skills in Frisco before going onto brighters lights and bigger stages. One of them is Joey Gallo.
After the heartbreaking 2011 World Series loss, the Rangers lost C.J. Wilson during Free Agency. This gave them a pick in the "compensation round" of the 2012 draft, where they picked Joey Gallo and gave him a 2.2 $ MM signing bonus. In 2013, he became the first teenager in fifty years to hit fourty home runs in a minor league season. In late June 2014, Gallo was promoted to Frisco and hit a heartbreaking game winning home run against Midland in his first game.
An astute baseball fan may realize that Joey Gallo was originally a third baseman. Because the Rangers already had a third baseman, Adrian Beltre, Gallo became a first baseman/outfielder. By mid-eason 2015 Gallo was on the Rangers, and by 2017 he was a major league regular. He was named to the 2019 All Star Game and in 2020, won a gold glove for his defense in right field.
