This country is criss crossed by many footpaths, bridleways and byways. It is estimated that there is
140,000 miles of footpaths and 20,000 miles of bridleways in the UK.
In England and Wales local councils must record the existence and locations of rights of way and make sure this information is available for public use. This is called the Definitive Map and is available to view during office hours at a local council office.
One of the tasks is to maintain the access to the footpaths and in this particular case it has been cleared so it is accessible after a number of years.
