Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden at the top of Melbury Hill which offers superb 360° views of the Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset countryside. Make sure you choose a clear sunny day to visit!

The chalk grassland of Melbury Hill is rich in wildflowers including pyramidal orchids and to rare butterflies such as the Adonis Blue which appear in early summer and late summer (May to June and August to September).

Free parking is available at N50°58.062 W2°09.819 (ST886187). From here take the National Trust path alongside the road (not the farm track). The walk to the cache is just over a mile and includes a fairly steep grassy climb but the views are worth it! Click here for a map.

If you need refreshment after the walk we can recommend the cafe at the nearby Compton Abbas airfield (ST891185) where you can watch the comings and goings of the many light aircraft.

If you come from the south look out for the mobile phone mast disguised as a fir tree up the road at N50°56.768 W2°09.934.

The cache is a green ammo box and was restocked on 7 July 2005. Don't feel obliged to take anything but please leave something of similar value if you do (not a travel bug). All our items are new and cost at least £1 each. PLEASE DON'T TAKE SOMETHING JUST TO LEAVE IN ANOTHER CACHE. Feel free to take one of our handcrafted geocaching badges (no swop required).
