The Odd Couple (1970 TV series)
NEVER SAW THE PLAY, LOVED THE MOVIE! LOVED THE FIRST TV SHOW, COULDN'T STAND THE 2ND SHOW!
One is neat, one is a slob. Both are divorced and need a place to stay. That's how fussy photographer Felix Unger and sloppy sportswriter Oscar Madison end up sharing a New York City apartment. The arguments are endless but funny; it's like watching your parents fight.
The first season was filmed at Paramount studios utilizing the same apartment set seen in Paramount's 1968 film version. There were some minor changes made in the development of the series. In both TV series and play, Felix's last name was spelled Unger but in the film it is spelled Ungar. In the stage play, Felix is a news writer for CBS (in the film he writes the news for "television"), while in the TV series he is a commercial photographer. (His slogan, which he is quick to vocalize, is "Portraits a specialty".) His wife is named Frances in the play and in the film, but is Gloria in the TV series.
In the play and the film, Oscar has at least two children (including a son "Brucey"), who are referred to but not seen. In the series, Oscar is childless. In the play and the film, Felix has a son and a younger daughter. In the series, the children's birth order is reversed, and they are named Leonard and Edna, after Tony Randall's real first name and his own sister's.

People have said the show was a "hit" but in reality it was almost cancelled every year it was on---when it was in repeats during the summer the ratings were much higher which led ABC to renew the show every year---Jack Klugman was frustrated by the ratings and believed that once the show was off the air and in syndication that it would then be a major hit---he ultimately convinced Tony Randall to forgo a salary and take a percentage of the syndication rights--Randall although sceptical agreed--as it turned out Klugman was absolutely right---the show was an absolute gold mine in syndication (at one point you could watch it on almost every channel in the 1980's)--the Odd Couple made both Randall and Klugman very rich men.
