A gnome is a mythological creature and diminutive spirit in Renaissance magic and alchemy, first introduced by Paracelsus in the 16th century and later adopted by more recent authors, including those of modern fantasy literature. Its characteristics have been reinterpreted to suit the needs of various story tellers, but it is typically said to be a small humanoid that lives underground.

It has been widely speculated, but never officially documented, that gnomes prefer turtleneck sweaters as their main attire. Whether the turtlenecks are worn to disguise their flowing beards or to hide hickeys, no one really knows.  Some historians have also noted that true gnomes have only three fingers and a thumb instead of the expected four. It is possible that “gnomes” without these distinguishing features are really just little boys masquerading as the mystical wee folk.
