11/07 Update
The road looks as though it has been graded. You still need a high clearance vehicle to get farther than the stock tank and a 4WD to get almost all the way there.

The Muffler Gulch Cache is hidden on a canyon side in the east foothills of the Guadalupe Mountains. To get to the area, take SR 137 west from US 285 between Carlsbad and Artesia, NM. Go west and you will climb up the foothills toward Queen, NM. Not far east of Queen, a sign points the way to the Lincoln National Forest Administrative Center. Turn north from SR 137 on this road.

You will go past the center on a dirt road for a couple of miles and end up at a dead end on the edge of a canyon. The cache is not far away.

Now, for the problem. The reason for the cache name will be found along the road, about two thirds of the way from the pavement to the cache. Carefully driven passenger vehicles can probably make it about half way to the cache. We suggest you park them near the stock tank near N32 12.903 / W104 41.015, and walk the rest of the way (around a mile).

Higher vehicles should have no problem in driving to near the cache - be careful or you may contribute to the cache name!

The cache is an ammo can painted to match surroundings.

Please take a look at the Mountain Lion Caution Photo attached - there are quite a few of these critters in the area. Take care with pets and children!!!!
