Huzarski skok

Hussar's jump

At Dravograd, where the right tributary of the river Meža flows into the river Drava, the Drava enters the picturesque Drava Valley between Kozjak in the north and Pohorje in the south. The river drives six hydroelectric power plants one after the other. From Ruše on, it flows through a wider, densely populated valley all the way to Maribor. It has numerous torrential tributaries on both sides, including Kamniški stream.
On the left bank, just behind the hydroelectric power plant named Mariborski otok, where the Kamniški stream flows into the Drava, there are 2 smaller waterfalls that overflow over interesting BLACK rocks called marine marl. This rocks are known as the Hussar's Jump. Rare Old Miocene rocks are the only ones of their kind in Slovenia, and the local ambient landmark is a hydrological and geomorphological natural monument.
The Hussar's Jump got its name in 1849, when a battle took place above the walls at the mouth of the stream between the local army and the Hungarians, who were leaving for home. Two hussars, who wanted to escape, jumped over the walls into the river Drava. It didn’t end well for both, as one drowned and the other was later caught. The area of Kamniški stream between the road and the Drava and under the overhanging wall is now called Hussar's Jump.

Marine Marl

Podravinje is largely covered with young Middle and Upper Pliocene sediments consisting of clays, sands and pebbles. Only in the south do older Miocene strata pass into the area in question: Sarmatian, Miocene marine conglomerates, nuliporic and Lithuanian limestones, and Miocene marine marls and sandstones.
All these older Miocene strata are represented north of the Dravinja only in a narrow belt. They are heavily wrinkled, with Pliocene pebbles and sands stacked discordantly (inconsistently) on them. Extensive plains are filled with Pleistocene sediments and alluvium.

River marl

Marl is one of the sedimentary rocks that are formed in a suitable environment in the sea or, less frequently, in lakes. This is the source of the name "Marine". The name "Marine Marl" was introduced by A. Winkler (jhb. D. Geol. Reichsansfalt 1913), and was taken over by F. Heritsch (source: Geografski vestnik 1927; Maribor, Geomorphological conditions). The marl is usually dark gray but the marl at the Hussar's Jump is fully black. Such colors are mainly due to organic inclusions. Marl is formed when grains of clay, limestone or dolomite combine. Marl is a smooth substance, it is also used for building material. The clay in marl is of sedimentary origin, composed mainly of fine-grained minerals. Marl is easily chipped because it contains tiny particles of clay.

Questions

1. Look at the marl walls just before Kamnniški stream outflow into the river Drava. Are the walls completely black or do you find gray marl inclusions somewhere?
2. What do the inclusions look like (are they long shaped, vertical / horizontal or are they round / elliptical) and what is their size [cm]?
3. Water usually forms marl so that it is perfectly smooth. Is the marl on the walls also smooth? Describe why it is like that.
4. Find a piece of marl. Can you write with it like with charcoal? Is it hard or soft and which material gives it hardness or softness?
5. Take a photo of yourself or your personal item here. The photo must contain your GC name and the date of visit written on the paper or any other material.

Please send the answers to nisem.geocacher@gmail.com or via your GC profile before signing up for an Earth cache. You can write a find log online immediately afterwards without my reply. In case of incorrect answers I will contact you.
