Svatý Jan pod Skalou je již po nìkolik staletí významným centrem kulturního a spoleèenského dìní. Vdìèí za to nejen nedalekému hradu Karlštejnu a bohaté historii, ale pøedevším ojedinìlostí a polohou místa samého uprostøed krásné pøírody Èeského krasu. Navíc je to místo velmi pøístupné z nedaleké Prahy. V souèasnosti je Svatý Jan pod Skalou - po Karlštejnu - druhým nejvíce navštìvovaným místem v okrese Beroun (kromì mìsta Berouna samotného) . Pozornosti návštìvníkù se tìší již od 15. století, kdy se ke Svatému Janu upínala pozornost návštìvníkù pøedevším o svatojánské pouti (poslední nedìle v èervnu). Slavné Svatojánské poutì pøetrvaly až do poloviny 20 století, kdy byly s nástupem komunismu v našem státì potlaèeny.Od dávných dob sem smìøovaly kroky nejen obyèejných lidí, ale také mnoha panovníkù a význaèných osobností. V minulosti to byly zejména návštìvy mnoha císaøù a jejich vzácných hostù doprovázených svými chotìmi a dvorním služebnictvem. Mezi nejvýznamnìjší patøila slavnostní návštìva císaøe Matyáše v roce 1613, císaøe Ferdinanda II. a Ferdinanda III. Po stránce církevní jsou se Sv. Janem pod Skalou spojena i jména mnoha èeských arcibiskupù. V minulosti navštívili Sv. Jan K.H. Mácha, Bratøí Èapkové (kteøí sem dojíždìli za svým otcem, pùsobícím zde jako vrchní lázeòský lékaø kolem roku 1906). Významná byla též návštìva ministrù státù tzv. Malé dohody, v èele s Eduardem Benešem (13.7.1924). V souèasnosti se sem smìøují i mnohé aktivity a celostátní setkání Klubu èeských turistù. Pøes Svatý Jan jsou také organizované èetné hromadné turistické pochody, velké pravidelné každoroèní pochody (napø. Cementárenské šlápoty) bìžecké i cyklistické závody a poznávací výlety (botanika, paleontologie, historie a jiné.) .
Saint John under the Cliff
St. John under the Cliff is a small village in the district of Beroun, near the famous Karlstejn Castle in the Czech Republic. Many tourists are attracted to the castle because of its rich history. Beautiful natural scenery in the village and the surrounding area entices visitors from far and near throughout the year. Travelers often take advantage of the lovely countryside by hiking from Karlstejn Castle on the footpath through the woods, or beside the water upstream to the Berounka river and the Kacak brook. From St. John hikers may continue upstream along the Kacak to the Lodenice (train & bus stations), or from St. John through the woods to the Vraz u Berouna ( train & bus stations). St. John is easily reached by automobile. From Prague take motorway D5 towards Pilsen and exit after ten kilometers to the Lodenice village, and follow the signs through the colorful valley to St. John. If traveling from Karlstejn to Beroun turn upstream in the Hostim village. In two kilometers you will reach the famous St. John cliff. The St. John's valley is dominated by a rock reaching a heightof 159 meters. From the cross at its top there is a beautiful outlook to the area of Cesky kras, which is well-known for its geological, zoological and botanical aspects.
