Daxi is a district to the south of Taoyuan City. In March 2012, it was named one of the Top 10 Small Tourist Towns by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan. In addition to being the location of the huge Shih-men Reservoir, which provides water to the northern part of Taiwan, and Ci-Hu (慈湖) , which is the resting place of Chiang Kai-Shek, Daxi is also an area of stunning scenic beauty. Located in the foothills of the central mountain range, there are many ancient trails in the local hills and mountains, which were once used to connect Fuxing to Daxi and Taoyuan before the Bai-Ji Tunnel (百吉隧道) was built. So it’s very odd that the Daxi Nan Zih Gou Eco-Trail (湳仔溝生態步道) is not mentioned on any of the government websites, and remains an underused and underappreciated place to take a leisurely weekend stroll. The path begins just behind the Daxi 7-11 convenience store near the Bai-Ji Tunnel. It extends about 3K along the Nan Zih Creek“湳仔溝”, which runs parallel to Cheng-En Road.(承恩路). The entire route is flat, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and levels of fitness. There are quite a few bridges that connect the trail to this road along the way, so you have the option of doing the entire 6km walk back and forth along the trail, or beginning at any of the bridges that intersect the trail. The 湳仔溝is a small creek on the north side of Shi-Men Reservoir that eventually merges into the reservoir, and the raised, wooden path that runs beside it offers walkers fresh air, wildflowers, extensive wildlife and wonderful views as they take their leisurely stroll. This cache is located at the red Lung Xing Bridge. There’s no need to do any dangerous climbing to retrieve this cache. You can reach it just by standing on the road that passes over the bridge.
