Welcome to Deep Cut Gardens! Now owned and maintained by the Monmouth County Park System, the property was once owned by Vito Genovese, head of one of the "Five Families" of organized crime during the 1950s and 60s. The park is named for the way the garden has been deeply cut out of the rolling hills.
Edward and Teresa Dangler purchased the property in 1925 and built a 10 room colonial revival house on top of the hill, surrounded by landscaped grounds and fruit trees. When "Don Vito" purchased the estate in 1935, he hired local landsape architect Theodore Stoudt to design a large garden reminiscent of his native Naples, Italy. In 1937, the large house suspiciously caught fire within weeks of Genevese and his wife fleeing to Italy amisdst a looming murder indictment. He would eventually return however and many features date to the Genovese period including the rockery, the rose parterre and the pergola.
Today the park is 54 acres of gardens, meadows and greenhouses. While here be sure to check out the Horticultural center for the seed swap or for information on gardening & composting. As you walk the grounds keep an eye out for plants native to countries from around the globe. Park opens at 8 a.m. and closes at dusk daily, year round.
