Geocache Description:

View Point Park is part of Kitsap County Parks Department.  Benches, picnic tables and a great view of Sinclair Inlet.  Of historical interest is the anchor from the USS Norton Sound.

The USS Norton Sound AV-11 began life in 1945 as a seaplane tender. A seaplane tender is a floating naval air station that supports patrol seaplanes and their crews with food, fuel and repairs.  Tenders have a crane to lift seaplanes out of the water to be repaired onboard ship by the many repair shops onboard.  Shortly after the war the Norton Sound had a new mission and a new title. The USS Norton Sound AVM-1, a guided missile ship.  The navy used the Norton Sound to test the storage, handling and launching of guided missiles.  Instead of using a warship with cramped quarters, the Norton Sound with its large hangars area and spacious machine shops  was  perfect for testing out the new technology.  After guided missiles the Norton Sound launched a series of Viking rockets for space research.  In 1958 the Norton Sound launched three nuclear warheads into the atmosphere in the South Atlantic to test the effect of nuclear weapons on early warning radars. Later the Norton Sound was fitted with Aegis radar to test the system before being installed on warships, Vertical Launcher System for destroyers and cruisers and a lightweight 5 inch gun mount. The Norton Sound was decommissioned in 1986.

The Norton Sound was decommissioned and scrapped in the 1980s.  All that remains is this Anchor in a little known park.
