Geocache Description:

NM = National Monument

"National Monument" is the highest designation possible given to historic sites in Taiwan, followed by municipal and county(city) monuments. The designations are outlined in the ''Cultural Heritage Preservation Act'', and monuments are preserved by the Bureau of Cultural Heritage.

The history of the Taipei Railway Workshop is inherited from the Taipei Machinery Bureau built when Liu Mingchuan promoted the Westernization Movement in Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty. It is the beginning of the modernization of Taiwan's railway construction and maintenance facilities. Taipei Railway Workshop is Taiwan’s first modernized railway repair workshop built in the 1930s. It is an important site for Taiwan’s train repair, assembly, maintenance, and repair operations. It is the largest existing railway vehicle repair facility in Taiwan with the longest history. The factory witnesses the development of railway repair technology and contains the value of intangible cultural assets such as machine operation, casting, forging and vehicle maintenance technology for employees. The existing general office, assembly workshop, forging workshop, bus workshop, car parts workshop, paint workshop and other factory building facilities related to the repair operation process, as well as the internal combustion engine workshop, the second electric workshop, the third electric workshop, and the original engine room. Internal steam boilers, chimneys, and steam pipeline systems deployed throughout the district, power and locomotive repair facilities in different periods, as well as east and west open-air crane platforms, transfer platforms, underground approach, railroad tracks, and other facilities related to vehicle movement The procedures, logic and context of railway maintenance can be reflected from the relationship and location of each field and equipment to the workplace. The overall factory building presents the functions of modernist architecture and rationalist design. Large windows are opened inside the workshop to increase daylighting and ventilation, and reduce the discomfort caused by the hot steam generated by the maintenance of the locomotive; at the same time in another area. We also built staff-related welfare facilities, including treatment centers, changing rooms and bathrooms, staff canteens (later changed to auditoriums) and other facilities, showing the concept of the well-being of workers in industrial facilities and reflecting the labor-management relationship between managers and workers. The steam hammer purchased from the United Kingdom during Liu Mingchuan’s period is still preserved in the factory, as well as various repair tools and machines of different ages in the workshops, which are of deep historical significance and value. The overall field, whether in terms of architectural history, transportation development, economic and industrial history, labor culture, and overall industrial heritage, presents a unique railway culture and field, which has an irreplaceable status and significance.
