Salal is the default foliage of the coastal Northwest and can be found on most trails and headlands of the area. The dedicated Northwest geocacher will quickly relate to the above photo. Been there done that!
There's only a vague Salal tie-in to this puzzle (and it is not any sort of hint), so moving on....
On my recent stay in Newport, I enjoyed this display of motivational sayings which was hanging on the wall...

...and of course started thinking how a puzzle could be made of it.
Great advice to live by, certainly, but what would a similar list look like for us geocachers? I started a list and came up with some ideas included below. Amusingly, most of these would be utterly baffling to the average muggle!
This first set will lead you to an island in the northern and western hemispheres:
SmileyOften
GropeSalal
AdoptGeodogs
TrounceFizzy
TradeFairly
----------
SmashFrowns
GuardYourRails
Oblitterate
VisualizeGeosticks
ShriekThoseSkirts
ConcealTupperware
By the way, before you spend the next three hours looking up color codes, the shading of the words is for display only and has no relation at all to the puzzle.
The next set will lead you to another island, this time in the southern and eastern hemispheres:
AdoreSignal
SocializeEventfully
PulverizePuzzles
DreamInCamo
TieShoelaces
CalibrateConstantly
----------
AnnihilateJasmer
FocusOnTheArrow
CatchFakery
CacheAllDay
ConvertMuggles
And, one last set, leading to yet another island in the northern and western hemispheres:
FindEverything
ObeyFiveTwoEight
FocusOnWooHoo
RollYourOwn
SmellTupperware (for the geodogs)
SleepAllDayInTheSun (for the geocats)
----------
VanquishDNFs
RebuffMud
WriteInRain
MaskUpMaskDownMaskUpMaskDown...
MigrateBugs
TrustNothing
To earn the coordinates of the geocache, feed the names of the three islands to the Checker below. Your entry should be three words (don't include "island" in any of them). Spaces and capitalization are ignored.

This is the second puzzle on the hike to Angora Peak, but it is just a short walk from the parking area.
And, here are a few left-over geocaching inspirations which are not part of the puzzle:
