In 1815, the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, usually called AME church, was started in Amityville. For the next 20 years Sunday school and church met in the homes of Amityville residents. In 1839 land was offered to the church on Albany Ave and in 1843 an old  ice house was moved to the property to become the church. In 1940 and 1957, additions were made to the building to accommodate the growing congregation. However, these additions weren’t enough, and eventually, the church had to be relocated to a larger property in Copiague on Simmons St to build a new church. Bethel Copiague is the oldest African-American Congregation on Long Island.  In what year were the first services held in the new Church?
