This cave is said to have been used by Queen Margaret and Prince Edward to hide after the Battle of Hexham. The Battle was fought in 1464 between Henry VI and Edward IV, ending four years of warfare.
The entrance to the cave is at the bottom of a tall sandstone crag by the Dipton Burn and inside it is said to have two rooms.
Park just after Windyhill plantation and follow the bridlepath to the bottom of the gorge, then follow the footpath signs. Parking here can be a little tricky, especially in summer when farm tractors need permanent access to the lane leading to the field (a separate track). Please be considerate where you leave your vehicle as unless you have a 4X4 you may not want to park on the verge - if you check the map before you go, it may be possible to park at the opposite end of the footpath.
The track crosses Dipton Burn several times and only the first crossing has a bridge, so don’t wear your best shoes!
Some places are a little muddy and you’ll need to be a little careful of the slippery rocks, especially if there’s been a lot of rain.
We would have left the cache near the caves, but the GPS readings are a little tricky under the trees.
Pots and pans are not part of the cache. :)
