"You Never Even Called Me By Name" was written by Steve Goodman with uncredited assistance from his good friend John Prine. The song was made famous when it was recorded by David Allan Coe and released on his 1975 album, "Once Upon A Rhyme"
Steve was quite proud of the song and bragged to Coe that he had written "The Perfect Country and Western Song". As Coe relates in the song, he told his friend that "it was not the perfect country and western song because he had not said anything at all about
mama, or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting drunk."
Steve sat down and wrote another verse for the song and that last verse is why this song is also known as "The Perfect Country and Western Song".
