This Geocache is placed in the Wetlands Education Center of the University of Texas Marine Science Institute near the Amos Rehabilitation Keep. The Amos Rehailitaton Keep (ARK) rescues and cares for injured Sea Turtles, shore birds, marine birds, and birds of prey (raptors), as well as working up nesting sea turtles and excavating their eggs on Mustang Island. This statue represents the Green Sea Turtle which is an endangered species, Green sea turtles are the seconed biggest sea turtle in the world weighing in up to 400 pounds! During May to July you might be lucky enough to see a nesting Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle, they nest during windy days. Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtles are the most endangered sea turtle in the world, and they are the smallest weighing in at around 100 pounds. If you see any turtles on the beach don't touch or disturb them and call the ARK at 361-749-6793 or 1866-turtle-5.
