Geocache Description:

Soccer Stadium Florence ItalyOur family isn't big on sports, although hailing from St. Louis we'd root for the Cards & Blues any day.  Our boys were in soccer as a kid for a few years until one announced, "Why do we have to run?"  Yep, let's find a different sport for you.  However, when the boys were playing we brought them over to the field nearby to watch the college boys play---definitely much different than watching 5year olds playing.  :)

football "soccer" fans from Rome behind glassDuring a month in Italy on a study abroad trip, we got to go see Florence play Rome---it's advised to NOT call it soccer over there.  The weather was absolutely horrible but the game was a blast with great seats by the field.  To understand how serious they take it starts from entering the building.  You can only enter at the entrance near your seating and may only go down to the seating where your ticket is.  LOTS of guards who are happy to question you at every turn.  And the opposing team?  Their fans are literally seated in a corner behind plexiglass walls (picture to the right)!!!  We were happy to not be able to understand what was being shouted between the fans!  The other picture is of the Fiorentina Stadium.  Experiencing another culture through their sporting events is quite an adventure!

Games in the style of "football" or "soccer" have been around for thousands of years in countries such as Greece, Ancient Rome, and China.  All having the variation of kicking a ball of some sort with one's foot. So what about soccer?  “It’s an abbreviation of association football. Both soccer and American football come from the same set of precursor sports, which became popular in upper-class English schools in the early 19th century and spread across the Atlantic. All these games involved advancing a ball through an opponent’s territory and scoring at the far end, but the rules varied from place to place. Ultimately, the version adopted as standard in the United Kingdom came to be known as association football, while another set of rules won out in the United States. Thus the Americans took to calling their gridiron variety football, and referred to the British sport by the slang term soccer, derived from the soc in association.”

You are looking for a tube with enough room for some tiny trade items & a log.  Sometimes you will have the whole parking lot to yourself and be able to park a stone's throw from the treeline.  Other times when soccer games are in session, you might have to find a parking spot somewhere nearby.  The good thing is that you can get other caches along your way!

** Be aware of the creekbed directly behind the cache location--keep an eye on those kiddos & clumsy caching friends to keep them safe.**
