While owned by the city of Fredericton, the Ferris Street Forest and Wetland Nature Preserve is stewarded by the Nature Trust of New Brunswick. The 40 acre preserve came about as a result of a 2011 decision by the city to rezone the area from a green space to a residential area, resulting in a volunteer group called the Friends of Ferris Street to gather signatures and expert reports to deliver to the city arguing for its protection as a green space. In 2015, the city entered a 10 year license agreement with the Nature Trust to conserve the land.
The area is home to a wide range of birds, mammals, insects, and amphibians.
