Geocache Description:

These caches are dedicated to those of you who want to get off the sidewalk to walk/hike with your best friend. These trails are dog friendly. Please use proper Trail Dog etiquette. Always keep your dog on a leash & make way for other hikers who may not share your love of dogs. Be mindful of the environment and "Leave no Trace".

Skidaway is a barrier island south of historic Savannah. Skidaway Island State Park borders Skidaway Narrows, a part of the intercoastal waterway, and provides scenic camping and picnicking areas. Two nature trails wind through marshes, live oaks, cabbage palmettos and longleaf pines, allowing visitors to watch for deer, raccoon, shore birds and rare migrating birds such as the Painted Bunting. An observation tower provides another chance for visitors to search for wildlife on this beautiful island. Most facilities are ADA accessible.

The two nature trails connect to provide a 5.5-mile walk. Both trails lead to Civil War earthworks, liquor stills from prohibition days and shell middens from early American Indians. Dogs on 6-foot leashes are welcome on both trails except during the nesting season for the beautiful Painted Bunting. During that season (approximately April 1-May 31) dogs are only allowed on the longer Big Ferry Trail.

There is a shady picnic area near the trailhead, bring a bag lunch (& bug spray) & enjoy yourself.

There is a $2 State Park fee (or use your annual pass).

These coordinates take you to the trailhead of the Big Ferry Trail. Along the trail is a little side loop that takes you to an old liquor still. There is a sign so you know where to turn. The fence beside the still was an Eagle Project. Email me the troop number and the date on the fence to receive credit for this find.
