NCGO @ Jordan Lake CITO - Sunday, April 11, 09:00 - 12:30
Come on out on Sunday, April 11, and help us give a little back to the community and environment by cleaning up a portion of the Jordan Lake shoreline that NCGO has adopted. The area was recently flooded so there will sadly be plenty of trash to pick up.
Meet at the posted coordinates at 9:00AM - please be prompt - and we will end by 12:30. Those who would like to continue past that time are more than welcome. Arrive a bit early for coffee, juice and donuts. Current NC COVID-19 guidelines allow up to 100 people to gather at ourdoor events (would be awesome to have 99 cachers/friends show up!). Please remember to wear a mask. Our usual picture will need to be spread out to allow for social distancing!
The North Carolina Geocachers Organization continues to partner with Clean Jordan Lake to clean up the shoreline of Jordan Lake. Clean Jordan Lake works to expand volunteer programs to remove shoreline trash, to inform local and state government agencies about this problem, and to recommend trash prevention strategies that will keep the shoreline clean in the future.
We will be meeting at the posted coordinates at 9:00 AM on 4/11/2021. After a 'before' group picture, we will hike to the branch trailhead and on to the cleanup area. We will be spending approximately 2 hours picking up trash. Clean Jordan Lake will provide trash bags, grabbers and gloves. (Clean Jordan Lake volunteers clean gloved and grabbers after their use.) If you would rather wear your own work gloves, please feel free to bring them but gloves are required. All trash must be piled up near the shoreline but far enough back to avoid floating away in the event the lake level rises before the trash is picked up. We will mark waypoints to our piles and Clean Jordan Lake will travel to the trash coordinates later by boat to remove the trash.
While we are partnering with Clean Jordan Lake we have been asked to follow their established guidelines:
- Sign a liability waiver form for each participant (this may require parent/guardian signature if participant is a minor). We will have forms at the event. Or you can complete an online waiver in advance at https://www.cleanjordanlake.org/volunteer-waiver
- Obey safety precautions such as wear closed toe shoes, gloves, long pants, long sleeve shirt and hat (these are all to avoid cuts, ticks, chiggers and poison ivy)
- Everyone participating in the event should wear gloves. If you do not bring your own work gloves they will be provided for you.
- Clean Jordan Lake stipulates a minimum age of 11 for all participants.
This area is gamelands and is undeveloped. Please keep this in mind and dress appropriately for a woods hike. All usual precautions apply while hiking through this area. There will be a minor hike involved so please be sure to bring any water and snacks that you might need. Hiking boots and long pants are encouraged. Bug spray, too.
