Gloster Javelin FAW 4 XA734 of 23 Squadron, Royal Air Force
On 11th February 1958, Flying Officer FHB Stark, with navigator Flying Officer P Baigent, took off from RAF Coltishall. Shortly after becoming airborne, a catastrophic failure of the starboard engine and resulting severe fire, burnt away the tail and caused structural failure. This resulted in a loss of hydraulic power. The crew successfully abandoned the aircraft and were uninjured. The aeroplane crashed sixteen miles south west of Coltishall, close to The Lizard and Rightup Lane in Wymondham. The fin and tail plane landed 600 yards away from the fuselage.
