2000 

 

 This series is dedicated to the first 20 years of geocaching and celebrating the community it created around the world. 

 

The caches in this series should be pretty easy finds. The fun part of this series should be reading the fun facts and historical notes on each page and collecting the smilies. 

 

 As always, be safe and watch out for nature’s hazards like wild animals, snakes, poisonous plants, and stinging critters.

 

After all the panic and doomsday preparation, our society didn’t collapse with the arrival of Y2K.

 

In the year 2000:

 

 The first geocache goes live and the first FTF was born.

 

 Traditional, Virtual, Multi, and Mystery caches all saw their beginnings in a short 7 month span.

 

 Geocaching popularity grew by leaps and bounds.

 

 Bill Clinton was President and Al Gore(the inventor of the internet) was Vice President.

 

 The last Peanuts comic strip was published, and Charles Schulz—the cartoonist who created Peanuts—passed away.

 

 Barry Bonds became the first MLB player to hit a home run into the San Francisco Bay, and Tiger Woods became the youngest player to win a Grand Slam in golf.

 

 Juan Pablo Montoya won the Indy 500.

 Dale Jarrett won the Daytona 500.

 New York Yankees won the World Series.

 St. Louis Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV.

 Los Angeles Lakers were NBA Champions.

 New Jersey Devils won the Stanley Cup.

 In the Sydney, Australia Summer Olympics, the United States won 97 medals, including 40 gold medals. 

 

 Total U.S. population was 281,421,906.

 

 Popular baby names were Jacob, Aiden, Ethan, Matthew, Emily, Emma, Madison, and Hannah.

 

 You still relied on a clock radio to wake you up because Google Assistant wasn’t around yet

 

 You had five more hours in your day because you only had a tiny flip phone. (Remember, flip phones could only do so much).

 

 You patiently printed out map directions from MapQuest.

 

 Microsoft released Windows 2000 and Internet Explorer was launched.

 

 Consumers bought 943 million CDs.

 

 The top  grossing movie was

“How The Grinch Stole Christmas.”

 

 The price of a first-class stamp was 34 cents.

 

 Gasoline cost $1.26 per gallon.

 

Folgers coffee was $1.99 for an 11 oz can.

Bacon cost $1.39 per pound.

Bananas were 3 pounds for $1.00.

A five pound bag of Russet potatoes cost 79 cents.
