Geocache Description:

2001

This series is dedicated to the first 20 years of geocaching and celebrating the community it created around the world.

The caches in this series should be pretty easy finds. The fun part should be reading the fun facts and historical notes on each page.

As always, be safe and watch out for nature’s hazards like wild animals, snakes, poisonous plants, and stinging critters.

As you log these caches, please feel free to share any fun facts, trivia, or memories about this particular year.

 In the year 2001:

GC389 became the first ever geocaching event. It was held in Austin, Texas.

The first Webcam cache was published in the Houston area.

The first trackable Geocoin was introduced.

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, was launched.

 K13 moved to Tatum, Texas.

Silly Putty and Tonka trucks were inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame.

Ground beef was $1.49 per pound.

 Kellogg’s Froot Loops cost $1.99 for a 15-ounce box.

Pillsbury flour was 89 cents for a five-pound bag.

Peanut butter (Skippy) was 99 cents for an 18-ounce jar.

AOL announced that it had over 28 million members, and AOL.com was the most popular website.

2001 also provided some history that can’t really be considered fun facts.

For example, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt lost his life in the running of the Daytona 500.

On September 11, now referred to as 9/11, nineteen terrorists who were members of the Islamic group al-Qaeda simultaneously hijacked four U.S. passenger air carriers. Two of the planes crashed into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. The third plane crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed into a rural field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The 9/11 attacks killed nearly 2,700 people and injured over 6,000 others.
