Geocache Description:

Scots-Irish, English and German settlers originally founded Cherryville in the mid 1700s. They had land grants dated back to 1752 and signed by the king of England. The area was located in Old Mecklenburg County but in 1768 Tryon County was formed. The county was named for William Tryon, the governor of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771. Then in 1779, Tryon County was divided into Lincoln and Rutherford County, and Tryon County ceased to exist. Later in 1846, Gaston County was formed from the southern portion of Lincoln County.

The county seat and the courthouse for Tryon County were located about three miles outside of present day Cherryville. The courthouse was in the home of a resident named Christian Mauney. Mauney and many of his neighbors played an important part in the American Revolution. On August 14, 1775, fourty-nine men met at Mauney’s house and wrote The Tryon Resolves. The Tryon Resolves were written in response to the Battle of Lexington and Concord and was among the earliest of many colonial declarations against the policies the British government had instituted in the colonies, which were considered oppressive by the colonists.

Soon after, as tensions between the North American colonies and the British government continued to grow, county residents began forming the Committees of Safety and the Tryon County militia to prepare for a potential war. The American Revolution began April 19, 1775 and ended September 3, 1783 when General Cornwallis was surrounded and forced to surrender at Yorktown, Virginia. Two years later, the Treaty of Paris made it official: America was Independent!
