Henry Summit is credited with starting the first business in Cherryville. Henry came to the area in 1852 and started a distillery and mercantile business soon after. In 1846, the first textile mill was established in Gaston County and the county would eventually become known as the “Yarn Capital of the World.” The introduction of steam power allowed mills to be located in other places than just along side a river or creek. This resulted in “mill towns” and Cherryville was one of the fastest growing mill towns in Gaston County.
In February 1891, Cherryville’s first cotton mill was opened. It was known as Cherryville Manufacturing Company. There were several other mills that opened in Cherryville such as, Dora Mill in 1897, The NuWay Mills in 1917, The Rhyne-Houser Manufacturing Company in 1919 and the Carlton Yarn Mills in 1922.
