This is such a beautiful place. You are on the outer edge of King's Wood, reputed to be the location of a mine that supplied the pitchblende for Marie Curie to use in her radium experiments. Indeed, in 1919, a valuable pitchblende (now called uraninite) discovery was made in a mine in those woods. The oxide content was over 26%, 13 times as rich as the American ore imported at the time. Then, pitchblende was £400,00 an ounce; gold was £13, so it was a truly lucrative discovery! The mine had previously been worked for its rich deposits of copper, nickel, cobalt & bismuth. There are still high radiation levels in & around the mine (wherever it is; it's a well-kept secret, understandably) & under no circumstances should anyone try to gain access to it. The background radiation level in the area is about 12 counts/sec, and 50 counts in the first metre of the adit. In the chamber containing the pitchblende, the count exceeds 2000/sec. Lethal.
So, enjoy the woods for the trees, the babbling brooks, the birdsong (including woodpeckers, grey wagtails & even the cuckoo in May) and the beautiful wild flowers.
