Dr Ben Brookman was a respected medical practitioner in Victor Harbor for 33 years from 1955 to 1988, during a time of considerable growth in the area. He also served as Medical Superintendent of the South Coast District Hospital, which experienced significant expansion of its facilities in those years.
Ben Brookman was involved in the community, being a valued and active member of the Rotary Club of Victor Harbor. He was President in 1966–67, and was a member of the Annual Rotary Art Show Committee for several years, including a time as Chairman. The naming sign and early plantings at Brookman Reserve were the work of the Encounter Bay Rotary Club.
Ben was also a Committee Member and Guide for the National Trust. As their representative he took part in a Victor Harbor Council workshop to create a Tourism Marketing Plan. He played golf, and was a member of the Victor Harbor Golf Club.
The well known Carrickalinga House at the corner of Torrens and Hill Streets was the family home of Ben and Ruve Brookman and their family for many years. It is currently owned by Victor Harbor City Council and is used by community groups, including the Senior Citizens.
