***The cache is not at the published coordinates***
When we started Geocaching, Google Street View (GSV) was still two years away from being launched. Since 2007, it has become a useful tool for cachers. This puzzle will use GSV to take a short, virtual tour of a small area of Folkestone to gather information which will be used to calculate coordinates for a final, physical cache not too far away.
This virtual tour will begin on Fish Market, at the published coordinates, and you will follow the clues to travel east along The Stade. The clues given are in sequential order from west to east. GSV can be fiddly at times, so you may need to play around a bit to get yourself in the right place!
A (May 2014) = The number of yachts above the door of the shop immediately next to the brick arches at the end of Fish Market.
B (April 2017) = Travelling east, the number of letters in Reg’s surname on the wall of the trawlers' building.
C (June 2019) = Turn around and look out across the harbour. How many wooden 'bungalows' can you see that are still in place from the 2017 Triennial art festival? Multiply this number by 2 to get C.
D (May 2014) = The number of tables + the number of chairs outside the cafe with a nautical name.
E (June 2019) = Turn around and look at the small seafood kiosk. There is a photo of a fishing boat with ‘FE’ painted on the hull, followed by two numbers. Subtract the second number from the first number to get E.
F (April 2017) = At the pub with a maritime-themed name, multiply the ABV percentage of the first real ale listed by 2 to get F.
G (July 2018) = The number of hanging baskets directly outside house number 22. (Do not include the pub’s hanging baskets in this).
H (April 2017) = The number of people walking directly outside house number 17.
J (May 2009) = The number of unoccupied chairs outside the second pub you will encounter, which also has a nautical-themed name.
K (May 2009) = The house next to number 14 is for sale. The first number in the 11-digit phone number of the estate agent is K.
To calculate the final coordinates, input your collected information into the following:
N 51° K A. D (B-H) (C+E)'
E 001° (F+E). (J-A) B (G-K)'
Tweezers, a pen and stealth required! Thank you to Tentmantent for the idea.
