Welcome to Berholme Farm
The 100 acre parcel of land you see to the north was granted and patented to Catherine Ault in 1806 by the crown and continued to change hands over the past 200 years. In the records we have been able to find, the century brick home was built in 1879 and presently owned by Ben & Anja Berends. Ben's parents immigrated to Canada in 1951 from the Netherlands and later his grandparents followed, together the two families purchased the farm in 1956. Ben was 3 at the time and has been working the farm for 60+ years.
Ben & Anja with their 4 children purchased the Dairy farm from his parents in 1988, continuing to produce milk, corn and soybeans. In 2004 the dairy cows and milk quota were sold (stray voltage was a major issue on the farm) and continue to grow corn & soybeans for neighboring grain mills.
To the south - was S.S. No#14 Reids Mills/Clark School which closed in 1922 - just across the road.
To the north, Reids Mills - the post office opened in 1882, with Wm Reid being the first postmaster, who in 1871 had erected a sawmill, hence the name Reids Mills. Blacksmith shops, a saw, shingle and planing mill, a general store, public school and a Presbyterian church made for a busy corner. the village is favorably located on the boundary of Osgoode and Mountian Townships.
Oh, and the curves in the road from Hwy#2 to Reids Mills ... fun to notice that they were all squared off once. The crown granted squared 100 acre sections to loyalists to reward them for their loyalty to the crown and to increase the growth of settlement of the country.
