Two ornamental raised semi-circular ponds dominate this area, with pergolas sheltering a number of benches. Inside either pond there are a number of small square brick-lined beds. How many are in the one nearest to you (do not count the central drain)? Call this E. How many horizontal bars make up each section of the metal railing on the right as you enter the through the gates? Call this F

Here is the physic herb garden, with its formal, symmetrical layout and central fountain. There are 4 identical plant pots in each corner. What is the number stamped on any one of them? Call this GH

The Shell House - perhaps the least known of the mid 19th century follies that are located within the estate. Decorating outdoor buildings by glueing seashells and small pebbles to the walls was a common pastime among ladies of leisure. Look at the motif on the central column. How many legs are represented? The Suzhou Garden is an oasis of peace, calm and solitude. Find the plaque and note the date in February. Call this number K. Alternatively, and while the garden is closed, stand at the middle entrance and look at the wall to your right. Count the number of Chinese characters and add 1.

Monday - Thursday 8am-4pm, Friday 8am-1pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am-3pm.
NOTE: Access to the walled garden is limited to these times, and occasional outside of these hours, presumably for maintainance. So it is possible that one or both parts will be closed when you arrive!
