Origin of the name of the municipality
There are several hypotheses but we will focus on two of them. The first hypothesis is based on the fact that the origin comes from Latin, and the second hypothesis opts for a Greek origin.
The word Polus that comes from Latin, means pole, the north. As the town was located at a high point, it must have been the pole that guided the walkers who crossed this region, the warriors who carried out their marches. Or it could be the north for the people who resided where the current Villajoyosa is located, or the lands further south, for whom our town was the north that guided them.
In Greek mythology, the god Apollo represents the center, the beauty ... And from the center or the axis where it is located four rivers of crystalline waters are born.
If we admit that its origin was Greek, it could well be that its name was taken from Apollo. It is located in a center surrounded by beauties (from the La Marina region) and there are even the four rivers of mythology, since the Hulapdar, Chirles, Guadalest and Algar rivers are born in its surroundings.
The Greek word polis means city, town, which together with the name designated for our town would be called Apollopolis. Turning to linguistics, we must admit that there is always a tendency to simplify names, and thus, suppressing, as the years go by, the a at the beginning and olis at the end, the name of this town remains with the precise letters and the pronunciation we know today: Polop
Meaning of our shield
«On a background with the bars of Aragon, there is a hill crowned by a tower from which a fig tree emerges, all this fringed by nettles and surrounded by a baron's crown»
The known description of the coat of arms of Polop de la Marina corresponds to the time when the dominion of this Barony was owned by the Fajardos. The arms held by the lords who previously owned this manor did not influence its current coat of arms.
The shields of the first lords of this castle are inexplicably forgotten. Neither Doña Berenguela, nor Bertrán Bellpuig, nor En Bernat de Sarriá influence the future local heraldry of the Barony.
None of the knights who fought or conquered the castle lay their weapons on it. Only the nettles of the Fajardo family remain on the shield, as well as the castle that Roch Castelló, Nanfós de Carrillo and Nicolás Ayerve carried.
As Polop de la Marina was a barony, he must wear the baron's crown on his shield, unless he decided on the royal crown of the house of Aragon, since for a long period, after the death of Doña Berenguela, and later on the death of En Bernat de Sarriá, the Valencian royal family took possession of this manor.
Barony of Polop de la Marina
DISCOVER THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR MUNICIPALITY THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY
The territory of this Barony, located in the La Marina region, extends from the Guadalest and Algar rivers to the end of Villajoyosa, including the Albir and Benidorm beaches; on the inside it bordered Callosa and Guadalest.
When this barony was founded, it took the name of Polop because at this time it was the most important center and its castle was the most powerful and most suitable fortress for security and defense. The lord settles here and the baron or his attorneys regularly reside, especially when this lordship passes to the Fajardo family.
Under the protection of its castle, the Arab population of Polop acquires a certain importance, so it deserves special attention from the Christian authorities who settle in the place after its conquest by King Jaime I.
In the Kingdom of Valencia the baronies were groupings of places or towns that belonged to the same lord. Apart from the Barony of Polop, in this region there were several baronies: Callosa, Calpe, Finestrat….
The barons were authentic feudal lords, with all the rights and prerogatives granted to them by their lordship. Lives and estates belonged to the lord and the entire Arab population became his vassals, rather his slaves. However, the Arabs got on well with the lords, because they needed each other. The baron needed them to cultivate his lands and they found in the lord their best defender against the royal demands and against the fanaticism of the old Christians.
The castle or fortress of Polop was a disputed place between the Arab warriors and between the knights who accompanied Don Jaime I in his conquests.
