Geocache Description:

This is a small, magnetic cache. Please replace very carefully so that it is secure and well hidden. Thank you.

The quarry referred to in the name is Whitecleaves Quarry, one of the many limestone quarries in the area, though few are still working. Limestone was quarried here for building and for agriculture. As well as being used in walls, it was heated in kilns (such as Higher Kiln Quarry in Buckfastleigh) to make quicklime for mortar & fertiliser.

The quarries & mills, together with agriculture, provided employment for the locals. In the late 19th century, Buckfastleigh looked more like the industrial 'north' than a small town in rural Devon: quarrying, tin & copper mining, woollen mills, a paper mill, an iron foundry & 2 tanneries! It must have been quite a sight.

If you are lucky, you may spot a peregrine falcon who are known to nest nearby. If you come at dusk, you are likely to spot some of our local horseshoe bats scouring the night sky for food.
