This is a multi-waypoint leisurely walk/hike through a small village covering historic points and other points of interest as well. There are several places to stop for food and water or to shop for antiques and stuff at the start/finish of the hunt if you are so inclined. The village is a very active place with lots of things to keep you busy! Parking is available at N43.06.102, W077.26.462.
There are also two parks you will be going through that have playgrounds for the children. These will be pointed out on the way.
The route is about 3.5 miles in length (if you know where you're going) and is on flat ground with sidewalks and trails most of the way. There is one section which is up a hill, but it too has sidewalks. You could even bring a stroller if you have really little ones. Bikes could also be used very easily to speed up the hike. The cache is actually hidden within ½ mile or so of the starting point. It is within 50 feet of the path and within the last 15 feet or so you will need to do just a very little bit of bushwhacking.
NOTE: For those who don't want to walk a seven waypoint hike there is an easier three waypoint hike that leads to the same cache. You can find it at Walk for Wimps.
Obviously if you log one cache you don't log the other as they both terminate at the same location.
The theme of the cache is GeoCaching/Hiking/History. Please try and keep the cache contents in tune with those themes. The cache is a 1.5 gallon round tupper-ware container that is camouflaged with hay and leaves attached to the top. The cache was initially placed on October 8, 2002 and contained the following items: two emergency rain ponchos, a small compass/thermometer, a small first-aid kit, a small pack of elastic tie downs, a 4 pack of AA batteries, an ultra thin flashlight, a whistle, some brochures on the history of Fairport, a camera, and a log book.
Okay, we're off ...
As you walk on this hunt street by street,
We hope you might find it quite neat.
It's got history galore,
And much, much, much, more,
So, relax and enjoy a big treat!
To begin on this hunt fresh and new,
We start off with this very first clue.
The waypoint to find,
Will be clear in your mind,
Once you know that it's yellow and _ _ _ _!
But, some math will be needed to play,
In order to find the right way.
So, be careful and neat,
And be quick on your feet,
And you'll finish the hunt in one day!
Once you locate the first waypoint, you can go on to calculate the second waypoint:
Second Waypoint Calculation
Latitude Calculation (N)
- Record the route number of the road immediately to your east here - __________.
- Add 100 to item 1 - __________.
- Subtract 2 from item 2 - __________.
- Subtract the result in item 3 above from the latitude of the starting point. Keep the decimal points lined up and subtract as you would normally. The result is your latitude for the second waypoint.
Longitude Calculation (W)
- Record the anniversary year from the first waypoint here. Not the calendar year, but the number of the year being celebrated - __________.
- Again, record the route number of the road immediately to your east here - __________.
- Double the result recorded in item 1 - __________.
- Divide the result in item 2 by 10 - __________.
- Record item 3 minus item 4 - _________.
- Subtract 1 from item 5 - _________.
- Subtract the result in item 6 from the longitude of the starting point. Again, keep the decimal points lined up and subtract as you would normally. The result is your longitude for the second waypoint.
Waypoint two is nothing to fear,
Since we all, in good time, end up here.
Take Harlan's age when he died,
And the age of his bride,
To help make the next waypoint clear.
But don't make a mistake with his bride,
You don't want Anne's age when she died.
The age that you need,
Becomes clear as you read,
It's her age when her man left her side.
Now that you're at the second waypoint, use what you know to find the third waypoint:
Third Waypoint Calculation
Enter the family name of Harlan and Anne - _______________.
Enter Harlan's age here - __________.
Enter Anne's age here (be careful) - __________.
- Switch the digits of Harlan's age and then insert the digit 2 between them - __________.
- Multiply Anne's age by 8 - __________.
- Add 39 to item 2 - __________.
Latitude Calculation (N)
Subtract the result in item 1 above from the last three digits of the latitude calculated for the second waypoint.
After the result of this calculation is appended onto the following string, you will have the latitude of the third waypoint.
N43.06.0 _ _.
Longitude Calculation (W)
Add the result from item 3 above to the last three digits of the longitude calculated for the second waypoint.
After the result of this calculation is appended onto the following string, you will have the longitude of the third waypoint.
W077.26._ _ _.
This next stop will give you more "past",
But you'll have to go through it quite fast.
The hours are few,
As the days are too,
But the knowledge will last and last!
Fourth Waypoint Calculation
From information found at the third waypoint, you can fill in the missing words:
- _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Public Library.
- Perinton _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Society.
- For each of the first three letters of the word you completed in item 1 assign them their corresponding number, i.e. A=1, B=2, C=3, … Z=26. You should get a three-digit number. _ _ _.
Add 287 to this number - __________.
- For each of the last three letters of the word you completed in item 2, assign them numbers as you did in step three. You will end up with a four-digit number. _ _ _ _.
Subtract 2311 from this four-digit number - __________.
- Append the result of item 3 to the following string to obtain the latitude of waypoint 4.
N43.05._ _ _.
- Append the result of item 4 to the following string to obtain the longitude of waypoint 4.
W077.26._ _ _.
Now, move on to our history of war,
And some may ask us what for?
To keep in our thought,
All those who have fought,
And to pray that it happens no more!
The fifth waypoint is easy. I'm gonna give the whole thing to you. But before you leave this fourth waypoint, you will need to record the year of dedication - __________.
Just to the SE a few hundred feet is a playground that the children can play at before you move on!
The Fifth Waypoint - N43.05.989, W077.27.330.
You will notice the name of a fellow,
Who probably wasn't quite mellow.
Since our village he "fought",
They've left a small thought,
On a sign that's both green and _ _ _ _ _ _!
Sixth Waypoint Calculation
To calculate the sixth waypoint, you will need the dedication year from the fourth waypoint as well as the year recorded on the fifth waypoint.
- Subtract the smaller year from the larger and put the result here - __________.
- Multiply item 1 by 4 - __________.
- Subtract 5 from item 1 - __________.
- Multiply item 3 by 33 - __________.
Latitude Calculation (N)
Add the result from item 2 above to the latitude for the fifth waypoint. Keep the decimal points lined up and add as you would normally. The result is your latitude for the sixth waypoint.
Longitude Calculation (W)
Subtract the result in item 4 above from the longitude for the fifth waypoint. Keep the decimal points lined up and subtract as you would normally. The result is your longitude for the sixth waypoint.
Now, ... The arrow points back where you came,
But to change from a walk that's the same,
You should do what you ought'a,
Cross over the water,
And follow the N/E path along the canal instead.
(Sorry, I can't rhyme everything!)
Once over the canal, just to the west a few hundred yards, there is another play area for the children. It's got a bit more equipment than the last one.
You're nearing the end of the hike,
And, I'll bet you've wished for a bike.
One more stop round the bend,
And then on to the end,
I hope it's been something you like.
Waypoints six, one and three,
Are all similar you'll see.
They have styles much the same (1 & 6),
Then there's also the name (3 & 6),
Now … all set for the cache you should be.
Seventh Waypoint Calculation - The Cache
Use the information you gather at the sixth waypoint to calculate this seventh (and final) waypoint.
- Enter the date established that you found at the sixth waypoint - _________.
- Place the first digit of the number from item 1 in the first position of item 8 below.
- Add the first and the third digit of item 1 above and place the answer in second position of item 8 below.
- Add the first, third, and last digit of item 1 together then subtract that result from the second digit and place the answer in the last position of item 8 below.
- Add the first and last digit of item 1 above and place the answer in the first position of item 9 below.
- Add the last two digits of the number in item 1 and place the results in the second position of item 9 below.
- Subtract the first digit of item 1 above from the third digit of item 1 and place the results in the last position of item 9 below.
- ___ ___ ___
- ___ ___ ___
Latitude Calculation (N)
Subtract the result in item 8 above from the latitude calculated for the sixth waypoint. Keep the decimal points lined up and add as you would normally. The result is your latitude for the seventh waypoint.
Longitude Calculation (W)
Subtract the result in item 9 above from the longitude for the sixth waypoint. Keep the decimal points lined up and subtract as you would normally. The result is your longitude for the seventh waypoint.
So it's on to the cache you will go,
For your time, you'll have something to show.
Hope you've had a good day,
Now get on your way,
And mention this hike to those you know!
The cache is a 1.5 gallon round tupper-ware container.
