Geocache Description:

The 18th of a series of caches planned to be hidden at or near the historic rural schoolhouses of Routt County (RCSH - Routt County School Houses).  See the first cache of this series (GC6QQ71) for a complete and updated list of the ones currently available - but this list will continue to grow as there were 96 schools which served Routt County neighborhoods from 1883 until 1960 when the rural districts consolidated.

Depending on the day, your GPS may tell you you're in Wyoming and it may tell you you're in Colorado.   As I type this, this site is telling me it's in Wyoming... nevertheless, this was Routt County, COLORADO's FIRST school!  The district was established in 1881, although there wasn't a school here until 1883.   The first Battle Creek school was a small log cabin with several empty cabins near by that served as housing for the students and their mothers when school was in session.   The log school was replaced by a frame school in about 1915.  This school building sits about one half mile west of the original site.   Sometime after 1953, the school was consolidated with a Wyoming district.  It closed officially in 1961.

DO NOT TRESPASS!!  The building is on PRIVATE LAND!  The cache is on the road right-of-way and there is absolutely NO reason to cross the fence!
