Short easy hike up to the old forest lookout on top of Monjeau Peak. Walk up the stairs of the old lookout for some of the best views of Ruidoso, Villa Madonna, Sierra Blanca and the surrounding area.
You can approach this cache by turning off of State Road (SR) 48 onto State Road 532 at Alto, NM. Alto is approximately 5 miles north of Ruidoso, NM Travel west on SR 532 for approximately one mile where you should turn right onto Forest Road 117. Drive through the small village of Villa Madonna and continue driving until you reach the end of Forest Road 117. A car can make the trip in good weather. A pickup or similar vehicle is recommended. Use caution if it looks like it is going to rain or if there is snow on the road as part of the road is steep and winding. Note: The Forest Service closes FR 117, above Villa Madonna, during the winter. If it is winter, you should call the Forest Service and ask them if they have the road closed.
