NOTE you do not have to go around any fences! Cache is accessed from outside outermost fence.
I've always been fascinated with abandoned places and structures, so I decided to make a series of them around the Southern Highlands. There used to be a geocache for the Maltings however sadly it was archived. This geocache has a great vantage point to view and photograph the abandoned building.
The Mittagong Maltings is a three story building which was constructed in 1899 by the Malting Company of NSW to supply malt to various breweries around NSW and was sold to Tooth & Co in 1905. Two additional malt houses were built with all three in production for many years. Unfortunately they were to be plagued by outbreaks of fire over the years and eventually the place was abandoned in 1981. The site sold in 2000 for around half a million dollars but nothing was done. Then in 2019 the site eventually sold for $6 million but the father and son property development duo who bought it is yet to decide what to do with it. It is now surrounded by fences and security cameras but is still easily viewable from outside those. At no point should you be bypassing the security fences to find this cache.
The buildings are now listed as a local council heritage item. For a short video on its operation, check out this link on Facebook - https://fb.watch/ajam9DBfuR/
