Geocache Description:

This series is in honor of our Great Uncle Herbie.  Herb's family settled in South Kitsap in the mid-1930s.  He was born in Bremerton in 1939 and spent his whole life in Port Orchard, aside from college (CWU) and military service (USN).  If you knew Herb, you loved Herb.  He certainly has left a legacy for us to carry on.

All caches are hidden in or around locations that had special significance in Herb's life.

This cache is at Ross Point, a popular spot for smelt fishing in the fall.  He loved to fish and spent many hours at this location catching bait fish for salmon fishing.

From Kitsap Sun December 15, 2011:

"The schools run close to shore and are caught in large, sweeping nets - a technique known as dip fishing.  Smelt, along with crayfish and carp, can be legally caught in Washington without a fishing license.  The fish is commonly used as bait for salmon and steelhead.  It's also considered a delicacy by some, with brining, smoking and frying the most popular forms of preparation."

Near road.  Watch for traffic.  BYOP.

Congratulations to MarissaRivera and adryden on the FTF!!
