용두암(Dragon Head Rock, Yongduam)
용두암은 용암이 흐르던 용암통로의 일부가 침식에 견디어 남은 것이다. 용암은 온도나 구성광물질 등에 따라 점성이 다르다. 비교적 온도가 높고(1100 °C ~1200 °C) 점성이 낮은 용암(파호이호이 (Pahoehoe)용암)은 빠르게 흘러내리므로 표면이 평평하고 두께가 얇다. 이에 비해 온도가 낮고(1000°C~1100°C) 점성이 큰 용암(아아(Aa)용암)은 표면이 울퉁불퉁하고 두께가 두껍다. 아아용암의 상하부 경계면에는 형태가 불규칙하고 다공질이며, 천천히 흐르는 동안 먼저 굳은 용암의 표면이 깨져서 만들어진 자잘한 소암괴(클링커 Clinker)가 발달한다. 점성이 크기 때문에 두께가 수십m에 이르기도 한다. 용두암은 바로 아아용암이 만든 용암통로의 일부가 남은 것이므로 표면이 거칠고 모양이 울퉁불퉁하여 용을 닮은 형상을 하게 된 것이다.
Yongduam is a part of the lava passage where lava flew through and survived erosion. Lava has different viscosity depending on temperature and compositional minerals. Lava with relatively high temperatures (1100 °C to 1200 °C) and low viscosity (Pahoehoe lava) flows down quickly, making the surface flat and thin. By comparison, lava with low temperatures (1000°C to 1100°C) and high viscosity (Aa lava) has a bumpy surface and thickly thick. The upper and lower boundaries of the sub-lava are irregular in shape and porous, and small rock clusters (Clinker Clinker) are developed by breaking the surface of the hardened lava while it flows slowly. Because of its large viscosity, it can be tens of meters thick. Yongduam is a part of the lava passage created by Aa lava, so the surface is rough and uneven, making it look like a dragon.
용연(Dragon's Pond, Yongyeon)
용연은 제주시의 중심부를 남북으로 흐르는 한천이 바다와 만나는 자리에 있는 작은 연못이다. 용연이 있는 한천의 하구는 용암이 두껍게 흐르다가 굳은 것이 오랜 세월 동안 침식을 겪으며 깊은 계곡이 되었다. 그래서 그 양쪽 기슭에는 용암이 식으면서 만들어진 주상절리가 잘 발달하였으며 인근에서 포트홀을 관찰할 수 있다.
포트홀
포트홀은 하천 바닥에 작은 홈이 만들어지면 물에 의해 운반되던 자갈들이 그 속을 빙글빙글 돌면서 아래 부분을 깍으며 만들어집니다.
주상절리
주상절리(柱狀節理)는 용암이 급격하게 식어서 굳을 때 육각 기둥모양으로 굳어져 생긴 지형이다.
Yongyeon pond is a small-sized pond that is located where the sea meets Hancheon Stream that crosses the center of Jeju-si. The mouth of Hancheon Stream where the Yongyeon pond is attached became a deep valley after the hardened thick lava flow experienced erosion for a long time. As a result, on both sides of the bank, there are beautiful columnar joints that were created as the lava cooled down. You can observe the potholes in the vicinity.
Pothole : Fromed by the abrasion that creates holes in rocks by the penetration into cavities or cracks of the existing bedrocks.
Columnar joint : Columnar jointing is a geological structure where sets of intersecting closely spaced fractures, referred to as joints, result in the formation of a regular array of polygonal prisms, or columns.
