Geocache Description:

Please note the info below is for interest only. The cache is within close view of the details below to save people having to trudge across livestock fields. The cache is at a roadside.
Much of the roads in this area have little parking and many passing places on narrow roads. To the east of the cahe there is a small parking area, usually used for hillwalkers, just beside a sheep fank. A short walk on this quiet road to the west will bring you to the cache. When you arrive at the location of this geocache you will be rewarded with views to the south of the magnificent Munro Schiehallion and the Glen Lyon Munros just beyond. However to take you back in time from this very location the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey map (1867) shows Loinn Mhor as a collection of ruins to the west of Mullinavadie and Bohespic. This survey was carried out before the construction of the road from Trinafour to Kinloch Rannoch, which runs to the west of the site ( where you are now). On the current O.S. map the site is marked by a cairn, but this appears to be the result of recent field clearance being deposited on the remains of Loinn Mhor. In fact little can be seen of the footings of the dwellings which have been covered by bracken, and it would have been unusual to have dwellings next to a real cairn.

Close to the dwellings is a remarkable rowan tree which is growing out of a boulder. This lovely tree is the main point of the placement of the cache 🙂 So, if you are standing at the cache the ancient tree will be clearly visible in the field just beyond. The tree has its roots growing out of a crack in the and over the side of the rock. The tree appears to be very old and may have been growing in the same position when Loinn Mhor was inhabited. Perhaps it was even protected as rowan trees were thought to ward off witches and evil spirits. Just take a moment as you survey this ancient and beautiful landscape before you. Gur math a thèid leat!! 🍀
