Biddeford, ME is a city of approximately 22,000 residents and located in the commercial center of York County. The Franco-American presence is alive and well with not only the history of this area, but with the annual La Kermesse Franco-Americaine Festival.
Biddeford also has a history of early Franco-American journalism. Although it wasn’t the first newspaper founded by French-Canadian immigrants, La Justice was one of the longest run Franco-American newspapers, starting in 1896 and ending in 1950.
The founder of La Justice was Alfred Bonneau, who was born and raised in Québec. He had done editing work for L’Etoile in Lowell, Massachusetts prior to founding La Justice. Bonneau led his newspaper for over 20 years and was a leading figure in the Franco-American struggle to preserve their faith and language in the early twentieth century.

La ville de Biddeford, Maine, compte aujourd’hui environ 22 000 habitants and constitue le centre commercial du comté de York. La présence franco-américaine est visible non seulement dans l’histoire de la région, mais aussi dans le festival La Kermesse tenu annuellement.
L’histoire franco-américain de Biddeford s’étend au journalisme. Loin d’être le premier journal d’expression française de la Nouvelle-Angleterre, La Justice de Biddeford se démarqua néanmoins par sa longévité. Fondée en 1896, cette publication vécut jusqu’en 1950.
