Congratulations to Aidipi on FTF!
It may be hard to imagine now but Lybster once had its own railway. From 1903 to 1944 a single line of 13 and a half miles ran between here and Wick.
Some remnants survive, including the old booking office/ waiting room that you can see from GZ: it is now the club house for Lybster Golf Course and has been since 1979.
At its height three trains a day pulled into Lybster, but in 1944 wartime cuts meant a temporary halt to services. Temporary became permanent and the last train ran on the First of April 1944.
The land before you was once the railway terminus but the track and railway sheds are gone. A poem in Caithness dialect commemorates the 'Lybster trainie':
Some sing o' ships an' flying bombs
'At hurtle through e' air;
Some leak till praise e' racehorse
'E greyhound or e' hare.
Bit o' a' 'e things 'at ever speed
In air, on land or sea,
There's only wan 'at I wid choose,
'E Lybster train for me.
This is a container that's fitting with it's surroundings.Please bring your own pen or pencil and beware of any traffic going or coming from the golf course.
