I love hiking in the McDowell Mountains. I used to do a lot of trail running and would spend a lot of time on the City of Scottsdale's online maps pouring over all the various trails and trailheads when planning my routes. The maps and a calculator became my go to tools.
The cache can be found at N 33 38.ABC and W 1111 51.DEF by figuring out the total mileage of the routes below.
A: radDad1 leaves from the WestWorld Trailhead intending to check on his MLB series of caches. He only makes it to WW9 waypoint before returning to his car because he forgot to bring water with him!
B: radDad1 wants to have a long hike but can't stray too far into the Preserve since he is on call and could be called in to work. He parks at the Gateway to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve trailhead and heads out on the Saguaro Trail. He then makes two complete loops of the Gateway Loop Trail. He wants to finish with a nice even number so he makes two complete loops of the Saguaro Loop Trail before heading back to his car via the Saguaro Trail.
C: radDad1 is working in Fountain Hills so he only has time for a short hike. On the way to work he stops at the Sunrise Trailhead and takes the Sunrise Trail to Scenic View stop (SR7). He takes the same route back to his car.
D: radDad1 lost his dog so he parks at the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead and takes the Lost Dog Wash Trail and finds his dog at waypoint LD4 and returns to his car via the same route.
E: radDad1 wants to go for a nice trail run in his neighborhood so he decides to run his favorite loop. He parks at the Quartz Trailhead and runs the loop. He covers the Quartz Trail, the Talisien Trail, and the WestWorld Trail from WW5 to WW11 waypoints.
F: radDad1 wants to visit one of the lesser known trailheads in the Preserve and get in a short hike so he drives to the Ringtail Trailhead. He hikes west on the Ringtail Trail to where it meets the Anasazi Spur (AS1) and then returns to the trailhead via the same way he came.
