A Little History

Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the Penrith area was the home to Mulgoa tribe of the Darug people.  The recorded history of the area began on 26 June 1789 with the exploration of the area lead by Captain Watkin Trench. It was not until 1804 that settlers arrived with Governor King granting land to Daniel Woodriff.

In 1871 under the Municipalities Act 1858 the Municipality of Penrith was incorporated, followed by St Marys in 1890, Mulgoa in 1893, Castlereagh in 1958 and Nepean Shire in 1913.    This changed with the Local Government (Areas) Act 1948 with these areas being amalgamated to for a new Municipality of Penrith.  Penrith was then declared a City in 1959.
