I have a liking for old and new railway lines - As boys, my brothers and I used to walk the Puffing Billy Track between Cockatoo and Gembrook little knowing it was going to be replaced years later. You may have traveled the Rosstown Railway Trail between Oakleigh and Elsternwick with its series of caches. The SKYRAIL has opened between Oakleigh and Caulfield and further down the line.
There is probably no chance the Outer and Inner circle railway lines will be replaced but we have these lovely linear parks and forests in urban areas preserved in their wake. These are great tracks for walking, jogging or bike riding through areas with no car traffic.
The Outer Circle Railway line ran from Fairfield to Hughedale but it existed as 3 separate railway lines so passengers would have to change trains. It was first proposed in the 1870s but did not open until 1891. It was a commercial failure and only ran for 5 years in the Hughesdale/ Murrumbeena area - the line into town by then was via the preferred route to South Yarra into Melbourne - especially with goods coming in from Gippsland. The land boom that was expected did not happen along the line. Passenger trains stopped on this section in the late 1890s but the line was used a little longer for the transfer of goods up until the 1920s. The rails were removed in the 1940s and were recycled to provide raw materials for the manufacture of armaments.
On yet another walk through the Urban forest with my geodog, I found a replacement hide for URBAN FOREST that used to be close by.
This new cache is not too far from the legendary Suburban backyard cache in the same Urban Park. Further north is the Urban Cache 2 closer to Waverley Rd
It is a micro - so BYO pencil/ pen - this time the placement is on the other side of the path -. Watch out as muggles can come from 3 directions.
Please replace the cache exactly how you found it for the next finder. Enjoy the Urban Forest while you are there.
