The Southampton & Dorchester Railway, was built between these two great places and the whole line was designed by a Wimborne solicitor, Charles Castleman; the line’s nickname coming from his name and the meandering nature of the route. Opening day was the 1st of June 1847; a year later the line was operated by the London and South Western Railway and with grouping in 1923 came under the umbrella of the Southern Railway. Here, at Uddens Crossing, there had once been a signal box but that was abolished to save staff costs in April 1938 and the site reduced to a ground frame. Then, in June 1943 and thanks to WW2, the status was put back to that of block post and a crossing keeper employed. At the same time, a Government siding was installed on the down side.
