Sentendosi perduta e preoccupata per il bambino, Egidia invocò la Vergine, ed ecco apparire una Signora splendente di luce, i soldati fuggirono e la donna cadde al suolo in preda ai dolori del parto, la misteriosa Signora assistette Egidia nel parto e poi scomparve nel nulla. Egidia si ritrovò con in braccio il suo splendido pargolo e corse verso casa per annunciare l’evento straordinario. Egidia con amici e parenti volle tornare sul luogo del miracolo e grande fu lo stupore di tutti quando videro che i pruni selvatici erano ricoperti di fiori bianchi nonostante la stagione fredda.
Da allora la straordinaria fioritura invernale si ripete sempre nello stesso periodo e nelle rare volte che non si è verificata sono seguiti eventi nefasti. Fin dal XVIII secolo botanici e studiosi hanno studiato il fenomeno senza mai giungere ad una spiegazione scientifica.
La notizia del miracolo richiamò sul luogo molti fedeli e subito venne eretta una cappella, il primo santuario vero e proprio venne costruito solo nel 1626. Il numero dei pellegrini andava sempre in crescendo e numerose processioni di fedeli si recavano ogni anno al santuario a chiedere grazie, il vecchio santuario era divenuto insufficiente e nel 1903 iniziò la costruzione del nuovo e più capiente santuario.Oggi il santuario antico e quello moderno sono entrambi attivi e tra i due si trova il pruneto miracoloso.
