Pēdējo 30 gadu laikā Latvijā notikušas vairākas vilcienu katastrofas, kas prasījušas cilvēku dzīvības vai radījušas būtisku kaitējumu videi.

Vistraģiskākā pasažieru vilciena katastrofa Latvijā notikusi 1976. gada 16. februārī, kad Rīgā pie Juglas stacijas ātrvilciens Ļeņingrada–Rīga ietriecās pretimbraucošā lokomotīvē. Bojā gāja 46 cilvēki. Seši pasažieri guva smagus, 55 — vieglākus ievainojumus. Katastrofas iemesls bija pārmijnieku nolaidība. Atklājis, ka dažas pārmijas ir iesalušas, pārmijnieks deva atļauju lokomotīvēm izbraukt uz ceļa, pa kuru bija jābrauc ātrvilcienam. Otrs pārmijnieks bija aizņemts ar krāsns kurināšanu un līdz pēdējam brīdim neievēroja, ka lokomotīves izbrauc pretim vilcienam. 

Tāpat kā daudzas citas nelaimes Padomju Savienībā, arī šī dzelzceļa katastrofa tika visiem spēkiem slēpta. Lieta ar numuru 440 atslepenota tikai 2005.gadā, atklājot patiesos nelaimes apmērus. Arī tās liecinieki notikušo nav spējuši aizmirst.

In the last 30 years, several train accidents have occurred in Latvia, resulting in loss of life or significant environmental damage.

The most tragic passenger train disaster in Latvia occurred on February 16, 1976, when an express train from Leningrad to Riga collided with an oncoming locomotive near Jugla station in Riga. Forty-six people lost their lives, and six passengers suffered severe injuries, while 55 others sustained minor injuries. The cause of the accident was negligence on the part of the signalmen. It was discovered that some signals were frozen, and the signalman gave permission for the locomotives to proceed on the track where the express train was supposed to travel. The other signalman was preoccupied with stoking the furnace and failed to notice the locomotives approaching the train until the last moment.

Like many other tragedies in the Soviet Union, this railway disaster was vigorously concealed. Case number 440 remained classified until 2005, when the true extent of the accident was revealed. The witnesses of the incident have also been unable to forget what happened.
